Job description

Veterinarians at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) play a key role in food safety; they are a first line of defense against many diseases. They help maintain healthy practices within the food and livestock industries, including meat hygiene and the health of terrestrial and aquatic animals, as well as in research and diagnostic laboratories. They also inform the public and industry stakeholders about the risks associated with importing animal products and are responsible for inspecting animals and meat products. CFIA veterinarians work in diverse environments and carry out a wide range of essential tasks.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, overseeing the implementation, management, and enforcement of the Meat Hygiene Program in slaughterhouses. They are also responsible for enforcing laws and regulations and managing personnel.

Intent of the Process
A pool of qualified candidates will be established. This pool may be used to staff positions requiring similar qualifications and with various language profiles, employment conditions, and/or durations, including term and indeterminate appointments.

Required experience and qualifications

To be appointed to the position, you must meet all essential qualifications. Additional qualifications may also be considered in the selection of the successful candidate. Some of the qualifications (essential or otherwise) will be assessed based on your application. It is your responsibility to provide relevant examples demonstrating how you meet each requirement. ESSENTIAL EDUCATION
EE1 – A degree from a recognized school of veterinary medicine, either:

A degree from a veterinary school accredited or approved by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA); OR
A degree from another veterinary school along with a Certificate of Qualification (Parts A, B, and C) from the National Examining Board (NEB) of the CVMA.

PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION
Eligibility for membership in a Canadian professional veterinary association, meaning:

Individuals who are members in good standing of a Canadian professional veterinary association and hold a license recognized by the CVMA; AND
Individuals who are not members of a Canadian professional veterinary association but hold a Certificate of Qualification from the NEB of the CVMA.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS
If you meet any of the following statements, your application must clearly describe how you meet them:

A1 – Experience supervising staff or leading a team.
