Employment Counsellor
Job description
The Employment Counsellor is responsible for helping Indigenous clients develop their potential and enter the labour market by supporting them through individual counselling. The incumbent provides information on the school environment and labour market, assists in planning, implementing and monitoring programs and services, and ensures effective and professional communication with various stakeholders.
TASKS AND RESPONSABILITIES
- Liaise with private and public organizations and educational and training institutions to coordinate training and placement, as required;
- Meet and interview clients to identify their knowledge, skills, professional and educational experiences, strengths and weaknesses, motivations, values, career goals, etc.;
- Refer clients to the appropriate organizations when their needs cannot be met by urban services and program;
- Provide information and documentation on programs and services (e.g., employment insurance programs, loans and bursaries, etc.), help them access job search tools on the Internet and inform them of employment opportunities, according to their specific needs;
- Provide clients with information on careers and the labour market, and explain, for example, the nature of an occupation, working conditions, skills and job requirements, etc.;
- Enter data relating to non-financial services (e.g., interventions, progress notes, etc.) into files and ALMASS;
- Identify needs, prepare materials and conduct information sessions or skills/training workshops to support target groups in training and/or employability (e.g., resume preparation, interview practices, etc.);
Required experience and qualifications
REQUIREMENTS
- University degree in counselling, social work or a field relevant to the helping relation; or
- Diploma of collegial studies combined with experience in training and/or employment.
- 2-3 years of relevant experience in training and/or employment;
- Relevant employment and training experience with Indigenous clientele.
- Fluent in spoken and written French and English;
- Knowledge of common software, including the Microsoft Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook), Internet, and other related tools.
KEY SKILLS
- Good understanding of the reality of urban Indigenous clients, and of Indigenous structures and institutions;
- Thorough knowledge of the labour market, school and community environments, and programs and services offered;
- Demonstrate leadership, diplomacy, empathy, autonomy and discretion;
- Ability to build relationships with different stakeholders and to work as part of a team;
- Excellent counselling and helping relation techniques, and ability to solve complex issues;
- Good knowledge of assistance referral programs and services.
