Senior Manager, Indigenous Relations North America
Job description
We are looking for a Senior Manager, Indigenous Relations to support the Global Chief Advisor, Indigenous Relations in leading the rebuild of Rio Tinto’s relationships and reputation across North America through strategic engagements, policy insights on Indigenous matters and external advocacy.
This is a great opportunity for an Indigenous Relations expert to support the establishment and execution of Indigenous Relations initiatives in support of the Rio Tinto businesses across the region, with the objective of continually improving our social performance and benefit to Indigenous employees and host communities.
Reporting to the Global Chief Advisor Indigenous Relations, and working in a collaborative community, this role has the following responsibilities:

Develop and maintain a strong, effective external network of Indigenous and other key stakeholders that deliver positive and enduring relationships to support the strengthening of Rio Tinto’s reputation
•
Undertake strategic external and internal stakeholder engagements to advocate for Rio Tinto’s business activities in North America and deliver the CSP Indigenous Relations plan
•
Maintain a watching brief and monitor current and emerging external issues of importance to Rio Tinto’s operations and strategic areas of focus in North America
•
Proactively support the Product Groups and Functions in North America with advice, insight and guidance on Indigenous issues and policy matters as required
•
Identify and enable strategic opportunities for Rio Tinto leaders in North America to engage and connect with external stakeholders
•
Contribute to business knowledge from external engagements into the strategic planning and risk management processes
•
Champion and support the activation of activities of the Rio Tinto Indigenous Affairs North America team
Driving the implementation of strategies to maximise asset potential and deliver on the plans; aligning resources, people, succession plans and development
Required experience and qualifications
A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team

Up to 10 -12 years’ experience in managing complex problems
•
Demonstrated cultural competency
•
Proven success in strategic project or programme delivery and management, stakeholder management and project or programme risk management
•
Solid understanding diversity and Indigenous recruitment practices, including understanding mechanism to successful embed Cultural Competency across diverse groups
•
Sound understanding of cultural heritage management and legislative requirements
•
Solid organisational skills, including attention to detail and multitasking skills
•
A structured and organised thinker who is comfortable working at pace.
•
