🎯 Description:
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is seeking a Legal Counsel to join the Kahnawà:ke Legislative Services (KLS) team. This fixed-term position plays a key role in legislative drafting and provides legal guidance throughout the Community Decision Making and Review Process (CDMRP), ensuring laws reflect the values and culture of the Kanien’kehá:ka community.
✅ Responsibilities:
Provide legal advice and support to KLS and the CDMRP Technical Drafting Committees.
Conduct legislative research, analysis, and establish drafting standards.
Draft and consolidate legislation and regulations.
Offer legal opinions and participate in the development of Kahnawà:ke laws.
Attend CDMRP Hearings and respond to community inquiries.
Participate in meetings of the Kahnawà:ke Legislative Commission (KLC) and other related working groups.
Liaise with MCK Legal Services and represent KLS before administrative bodies if needed.
Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.
💰 Salary:
$96,179.20 to $109,033.60 per year, based on experience.
🕒 Schedule:
40 hours/week
Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Twelve (12) month contract from August 4, 2025 to August 1, 2026
12-month probationary period
Required experience and qualifications
⭐ Qualifications:
Degree in both Common and Civil Law from a recognized Canadian university.
Valid license to practice law in Canada.
2–5 years of relevant legal experience.
Strong oral and written communication skills in English.
Understanding of federal and provincial laws; knowledge of CDMRP is an asset.
Familiarity with Kahnawà:ke’s governance structure, policies, and cultural context.
Discretion, strong analytical skills, and ability to manage deadlines under pressure.
French and/or Kanien’kéha language skills are assets.
Willingness to learn Kanien’kéha.
