Legal Advisor
Job description
*12-month contract
**35 hours per week (50% at the office and 50% teleworking)
The Legal Advisor must:
Play an advisory role for senior management in advocating on behalf of First Nations and support the organization in strengthening its governance in health and wellness.
Representation and advocacy
• Support the organization and represent it in the context of advocacy activities or negotiations with government agencies or other bodies.
• Develop and implement proactive strategies related to legislative and parliamentary activities in an evolving context.
• Produce legal opinions or coordinate their production by external collaborators.
• Conduct legal research related to their mandates (legislation, case law, reports, etc.).
• Write legal and administrative documents and assist the organization during various representations (summons, formal notices, etc.).
Advisory role
• Ensure strategic watch activities on legislation and regulations in order to make recommendations.
• Play an advisory role for senior management on advocacy strategies and initiatives.
• Advise and assist managers and employees in matters such as litigation and lawsuits before judicial bodies.
• Develop materials for First Nations to facilitate the implementation of laws in an Indigenous context.
• Identify discriminatory situations resulting from the implementation of laws and government policies and propose the required strategies.
Required experience and qualifications
• Bachelor of Laws.
• Three to five years of relevant experience in one of the following areas: Indigenous law, constitutional law or health law. Increased knowledge of constitutional law will be considered an asset.
• Member in good standing of the Bar.
• Knowledge of the networks of governments and other partners as well as the health and social services sector is an asset.
• Knowledge and understanding of First Nations cultures.
• Knowledge of Office 365.
• Advanced level of French and English (written and oral).
• Willing to travel throughout Quebec to First Nations communities.
• A valid driver’s license.

Salary
The gross annual salary is between $73,255.00 and $90,253.80 and varies according to the candidate’s experience.
