Marine Conservation Project Officer
Job description
Your mandate
• Support First Nations teams in their work related to the marine environment, their search for funding, the implementation of projects and the organization of workshops, forums or training sessions according to needs and facilitate networking with other First Nations and organizations.
Your main responsibilities
• Develop and implement the work plan for project activities
• Develop substantive content on various themes related to marine planning and conservation: marine protected areas, marine spatial planning (integrated management of the St. Lawrence), Indigenous conservation sites, blue economy, Indigenous knowledge sharing, etc.
• Maintain ongoing communication with First Nations teams, First Nations organizations and the Government of Canada, more specifically the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and other non-Indigenous departments and organizations and act as a liaison between these players
• Conduct analyses on various departmental documents (strategies, policies, bills, etc.) related to the marine environment
• Participate and collaborate in the various activities of the FNQLSDI
Required experience and qualifications
Do you have the profile?
• Knowledge of First Nations issues, priorities, perspectives and aspirations in marine governance, marine conservation and consultation and accommodation
• Combination of college or university education and experience in marine governance and conservation or fisheries resource management
• Experience in project management: planning budgets, completing deliverables, producing reports, etc.
• Availability to travel occasionally to First Nations communities
• Excellent communication skills in French and English, both written and spoken
• Relevant experience working on projects focused on the marine environment, including marine governance (a great asset)
• Relevant experience working with First Nations or an Indigenous organization (an asset)
• Knowledge of an Indigenous language (an asset)
