Job description

📍 Location: Montréal and surrounding regions – Office based at the Montréal Courthouse (1 Notre-Dame East St., Room 8.83, Montréal, Quebec)

🎯 Description:

The Native Paralegal Services of Quebec (S.P.A.Q.) is looking for an Indigenous Courtworker to support First Nations and Inuit individuals involved in the justice system. You will play a key role in guiding, informing, and culturally supporting clients through criminal and penal legal processes in the Montréal region.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide accurate legal information to Indigenous accused individuals about their rights, obligations, and court procedures.

  • Educate Indigenous community members about their legal rights and responsibilities, including in high-profile cases.

  • Assist local courts by offering cultural insights on Indigenous traditions and ways of life or by providing relevant background information on accused individuals.

  • Support government bodies and organizations as a resource person on justice issues affecting Indigenous peoples.

  • Contribute to administrative duties as required for the smooth operation of the program.

  • Collaborate on or write Gladue reports (a strong asset).

Required experience and qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Must be an Indigenous person (First Nations or Inuit).

  • Fluent in French and English; knowledge of Inuktitut is an asset.

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and work experience; a college or university degree is considered an asset.

  • Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook).

  • Must have no criminal record and/or agree to a security check by S.P.A.Q.

  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle – willingness to travel is a strong asset.

  • Ability to work flexible hours with minimal supervision and travel when required.

💰 Salary: According to the salary policy in effect at S.P.A.Q.

🕓 Schedule and Benefits:

  • Permanent full-time position – 35 hours per week (Monday to Friday)

  • 12-month probationary period

  • Social benefits: Pension plan, disability insurance, vacation leave, and sick leave
