Description:
As a First Nations Community Claims Helper, you will play a vital role in supporting individuals impacted by the First Nations Child and Family Services and Jordan’s Principle Settlement. This position requires a compassionate, trauma-informed approach to assisting claimants through the settlement process while providing culturally safe and informed guidance.
Responsibilities:
- Provide direct assistance to claimants with form completion, ensuring a compassionate and culturally sensitive approach.
- Collaborate with regional Claims Helpers to address service gaps.
- Build strong relationships with First Nations communities, band councils, and local organizations.
- Guide claimants in understanding the settlement process, submitting claims, checking statuses, and appealing decisions.
- Connect claimants with mental health, legal, and cultural resources as needed.
- Participate in mandatory training to stay updated on program requirements.
- Adapt to changes in program priorities and processes.
Required experience and qualifications
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience working with Indigenous communities or individuals.
- Strong understanding of Indigenous culture, history, and the effects of intergenerational trauma.
- Knowledge of colonial policies and their impact on First Nations peoples.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to build trust with diverse groups.
- Intermediate proficiency with technology and virtual platforms.
- Willingness to travel, including occasional overnight stays if necessary.
- Preferred: Experience living or working in an Indigenous community.
Salary: $60,000–$65,000 per year

- Frequent travel within your region is required for community-based Claims Helpers. Urban Claims Helpers will occasionally travel within their designated areas.
