Job description

The Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal is offering you a position in its Conservation and Research team as Curator (responsible for the permanent collection), in its premises at Place Ville Marie, in downtown Montréal, in a stimulating context of architectural and institutional transformation. If you’re curious, always looking for solutions, an excellent team worker, and have a strong sense of organization, you will be responsible for managing multiple projects related to visitor services, in collaboration with the Musée’s multidisciplinary teams.
This competition is aimed at filling a permanent full-time (35 hours/week) position in the Exhibitions and Research Department. The Musée d’art contemporain allows hybrid work organization, depending on the Musée’s operational needs and the employment sector.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION
Under the administrative authority of the Director, Exhibitions and Research, the Curator (responsible for the permanent collection) works in close collaboration with the Director and Chief Curator to develop the collection and its orientations and collaborates with the Collections and Information Resources Department in management of the collection.
This person is mainly responsible for the acquisition, development, and exhibition program for the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal collection. He or she collaborates closely in exhibition budget management, operations of the permanent collection, and acquisitions. As a member of the curation team, this person participates in research on and implementation of the Musée’s programming by designing exhibitions based on works from the collection and, occasionally, temporary exhibitions. This person participates in meetings of the internal and advisory committees for the collection. Finally, this person actively solicits donation proposals and seeks out artworks from collectors, artists, organizations, art galleries, the business community, and other sources according to the Collection’s development priorities.
YOUR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for the Musée’s acquisition program.
As a priority, design and produce exhibitions from the works in the collection to highlight the Musée’s collection.
Responsible for the artwork certification process with the Canadian Cultural Export Review Board (CCERB)
Collaborate with departments related to the collection: Collection archives and restoration.
The Curator (responsible for the permanent collection) makes recommendations with regard to loan requests.
Promotes the Musée’s activities in order to ensure its local and international impact.
Actively contributes to development of digital content on the Collection.
Performs all other tasks designated by the Director, Exhibitions and Research.

Required experience and qualifications
ABOUT YOU
You have this expertise:
Training:
– Bachelor’s degree in art history or the equivalent
– Master’s degree in a related field is an asset
Experience:
– Have at least eight (8) years of relevant experience as a curator or any equivalent employment in which you have learned curatorial methods and techniques and have accumulated knowledge of the Montréal, Québec, Canadian, and international cultural fields.
You have these skills:
– Extensive knowledge of the contemporary art field and museology in Québec, Canada, and internationally
– Excellent knowledge of modern and classical art
– Knowledge of the numerous and rapid developments in contemporary museology
– Knowledge of the major theoretical currents in the human sciences that have had an impact on contemporary art and on its analysis
– Knowledge of the works in the Musée’s collection; knowledge of the trends and developments in contemporary art
– Excellent written and spoken French and very good written and spoken English
– Writing ability
– Knowledge of different vehicles for art
– Knowledge of the art system and the art market
