BDC is looking for an Advisor, Corporate Sustainability, for a one-year temporary position. This role is part of the Sustainability and Diversity team within BDC’s Strategy and Impact Unit. The Advisor will play a key role in supporting BDC’s sustainability objectives by developing resources for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across Canada, helping to foster resilient businesses and build a clean, low-carbon, circular economy.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide sustainability expertise to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop sustainability content and resources for SMEs, managing expectations within a matrix environment.
  • Enable BDC employees to utilize sustainability tools and resources.
  • Support BDC’s engagement plan for sustainable SMEs by building various relationships.
  • Meet with entrepreneurs (clients and prospects) to discuss sustainability strategies.
  • Assist the Sustainability team with additional tasks as needed.
  • Support data collection and reporting activities.

Required experience and qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a field related to the economic, social, and environmental aspects of sustainability, or equivalent education, professional, and volunteer experience.
  • At least ten years of professional experience in sustainability, ideally with SMEs or in diverse sectors.
  • Strong knowledge of sustainability standards, tools, and reporting frameworks, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals, B Corp certification, GHG Protocol, CDP, SASB, and emerging practices like TCFD.
  • Proven passion for social and environmental impact in the SME sector.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including active listening, diplomacy, and tact.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Team player with a commitment to achieving shared goals.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with strong presentation abilities.
  • Fluency in both English and French is required.
  • Experience in a matrix organization is an asset.
