Division: Public Works
Reports To: Roads & Highway Department Manager
Duration: Indeterminate (Seasonal), Full-Time (Six-month probation period)
Salary: $1,045.88 to $1,181.63 per week
Hours of Operation: 7:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Hours per Week: 37.5 hours

Core Job Information

Title: Roads & Highway Department Laborer
Purpose: To provide general labor and maintenance services to the Public Works Unit.
Date of Job Description: February 2025


Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Labor & Maintenance Tasks:

    • Perform tree/weed trimming, grass cutting, and rural road repairs (e.g., potholes, asphalt).
    • Assist with gravel shoulder repairs, traffic sign installations, and repairs.
    • Monitor drainage performance and report major blockages.
    • Provide roadside assistance to stranded motorists, contact local authorities or towing services as necessary.
  • Surveillance & Reporting:

    • Conduct routine surveillance of roads and highways, reporting deficiencies.
    • Submit daily activity reports and assist with inventory management (e.g., street light fixtures).
  • Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance:

    • Operate and maintain assigned vehicle, hand tools, and motorized equipment.
    • Perform daily preventive maintenance and assist with in-field repairs.
  • Public Works Procedures:

    • Record daily activities, complete timesheets, and submit equipment logs for internal invoicing purposes.

Required experience and qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma plus five (5) years of relevant road construction and public works experience.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of Kahnawà:ke’s road network and safety codes.
  • Ability to multitask and work independently or in teams.
  • Familiarity with Public Works operational practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, especially in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Valid Class 5 Quebec Driver’s License is required.
  • Communication in Kanien’kéha and French is an asset.

Working Environment:

  • Outdoor work in seasonal conditions.
  • Occasional evening, weekend work, and overtime.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Must be able to safely operate machinery and tools.
