Job description
🎯 Purpose
The Kanien’kehá:ka Rights and Research Coordinator plays a key role in supporting the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke’s efforts to assert and protect the collective rights and interests of the Kahnawa’kehró:non (Mohawks of Kahnawà:ke). This position coordinates consultation-related activities, manages records and documentation, supports funding applications and reporting, and provides administrative leadership to the Consultation Committee.
By ensuring the efficient organization and flow of consultation files and processes, the Coordinator helps safeguard Kahnawà:ke’s involvement in projects that are subject to the Crown’s legal duty to consult and accommodate.
🛠️ Roles & Responsibilities
📋 Consultation Committee Coordination
Organize logistics for Consultation Committee meetings (scheduling, agendas, materials, travel, refreshments, attendance).
Lead minute-taking and note preparation, ensuring accurate and professional documentation.
Finalize draft minutes with Committee members and ensure timely approval and distribution.
Maintain a structured follow-up system for action items and tasks.
Serve as the primary administrative liaison with internal and external stakeholders regarding scheduling and outcomes.
🗂️ Records & File Management
Maintain and update both physical and digital consultation files with clear structure and accessibility.
Keep project management software current with timelines, responsibilities, and deliverables.
Collaborate with Records Management and OCC Office Manager to ensure proper storage and policy-compliant archiving.
💰 Funding & Reporting Support
Identify relevant funding opportunities related to consultation and rights-based initiatives.
Assist in funding applications, negotiations, and agreement processes.
Track expenses and contribute to financial and program reporting in compliance with agreements.
🧩 Administrative and Strategic Support
Provide consistent administrative support to the Consultation Committee and KRR leadership.
Maintain confidentiality and discretion when handling sensitive information.
Contribute to the ongoing development of administrative systems and consultation workflows.
🏢 Working Environment
Full-time, Monday to Friday, office-based
Moderate stress during high-volume periods and deadline-driven tasks
Occasional travel and overtime may be required
Required experience and qualifications
🎓 Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Public Administration, or related field, plus one (1) year of relevant experience
ORHigh School Diploma, plus five (5) years of relevant experience
🧠 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to manage multiple files simultaneously
Proficient in Microsoft Office and project management software
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with attention to grammar and formatting
Proven ability to take accurate and professional meeting minutes
Able to work independently and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
Interest in Indigenous rights, traditional knowledge, and Crown-Indigenous consultation frameworks
Professionalism and discretion with sensitive and political content
Courteous, tactful conduct with both internal and external stakeholders
Adherence to MCK Administration Manual – Personnel Policy and Kanien’kéha language initiatives
Ability to communicate in Kanien’kéha and French is an asset; willingness to learn Kanien’kéha is required
