Job description
🎯 Purpose of the Role
The Director of Environment Protection provides strategic leadership in the development, implementation, and oversight of environmental policies, programs, and regulations. This role aims to protect the environmental resources of Kahnawà:ke and Tioweró:ton, ensure compliance with environmental laws, advocate for sustainable practices, and incorporate traditional Kanien’kehá:ka values into environmental stewardship.
🛠️ Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Policy Development
Lead the creation and execution of environmental policies, permits, standards, and regulations.
Advise senior leadership and the Council of Chiefs on environmental risks and legislation.
Ensure the development of procedures for inspections, enforcement, and remediation.
Integrate traditional knowledge, scientific methods, and best practices into all strategies.
Analyze environmental and social trends affecting the community.
Develop risk mitigation and emergency response protocols.
Stakeholder Engagement & Public Communication
Build partnerships and promote awareness within Kahnawà:ke and Tioweró:ton.
Represent MCK in public forums, hearings, and with external partners.
Advocate for environmental interests and community accommodation measures.
Act as subject matter expert and spokesperson on environmental issues.
Leadership & Operational Management
Oversee operations and strategic planning of the Environment Protection Office.
Manage budget, performance indicators, and team development.
Ensure regulatory compliance and implement performance-enhancing procedures.
Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders for joint initiatives.
🏢 Working Conditions
Office-based, Monday to Friday, with occasional fieldwork
Moderate to high workload stress; some overtime may be required
Availability for emergency responses and community meetings
Required experience and qualifications
🎓 Education & Experience Requirements
Choose one of the following pathways:
Master’s Degree (Business Admin or Environmental Assessment) + 3 years experience
Bachelor’s Degree (Admin or Environmental Science) + 5 years experience
High School Diploma + 10 years of relevant experience
🧠 Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Strong knowledge of environmental systems, sustainability, and laws (e.g., CNPI, NFPA)
Experience with GIS tools, environmental data analysis, and MS Office
Strategic thinking, problem-solving, and project management skills
Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal abilities
Experience in budgeting and performance evaluation
Knowledge of Kanien’kehá:ka language or willingness to learn is an asset
Familiarity with public consultation and regulatory processes
