Job Description:
The Chief Political Advisor (CPA) provides strategic guidance and counsel to the Ratitsénhaienhs on political and governance matters, ensuring effective decision-making and the representation of the community’s interests in external political arenas. The CPA works closely with the Executive Director and the Director of the Office of the Council of Chiefs (OCC) to align political/governance strategies with administrative and operational functions.
Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic advice on political and governance matters.
- Collaborate with the OCC Director and Strategists to ensure informed decision-making.
- Facilitate strategic planning and alignment of political priorities.
- Conduct research and provide comprehensive reports for the Ratitsénhaienhs.
- Support political negotiations and discussions.
- Develop governance policies and risk mitigation strategies.
- Provide direction to OCC leadership and ensure compliance with policies.
- Supervise and mentor OCC staff while fostering a positive work environment.
Required experience and qualifications
Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Public Policy/Public Administration with 3 years of relevant experience OR
- Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science/Indigenous Studies with 5 years of relevant experience OR
- A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in community governance or political advisory services.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong understanding of First Nations governance structures and policies.
- Familiarity with federal and provincial/territorial political structures.
- Knowledge of the Kanien’kehá:ka community, its policies, and traditional governance structures.
- Excellent analytical, political analysis, and negotiation skills.
- Crisis and risk management expertise.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
- High proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications.
- Ability to work under pressure with a flexible schedule.
- Fluency in Kanien’kehá and French is an asset; willingness to learn Kanien’kehá required.
Salary: $2,229.20 to $2,518.00 per week
Hours of Operation: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Hours per Week: 40
